Rules of the Great Life Challenge

The last attempt at the Great Life Challenge was overly complicated and un-runnable. This time around things have been streamlined significantly.

Twice a month there will be a gathering where two challenges will take place, once on a Wednesday and once on a Saturday. After this month the challenges will be announced a month in advance, to give people time to prepare/train.

Each challenge will test one of your essential attributes. Each attribute will have 6 challenges associated with it, 3 held on Wednesdays and 3 on Saturdays. To qualify to be The Grand Life Winner you need to show up to only 2 of these 6. If you participate in 4, however, you may drop your lowest score, and at 6 you may drop your two lowest.

The GLC will take place over the course of a year, beginning January 2008 and ending December 2008. At the end of the year a Grand Life Winner will be announced, accompanied by the Masters of the eight essential attributes. There will be trophies.

For reference, the eight essential attributes are as follow: Burning Passion, Wizardry, Artfulness, Cunning, Robomind, Video Games, Meat Power, and Sportiness. More on those later.

SUMMARY OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

SHOW UP ON THE TWO APPOINTED DATES EVERY MONTH AND GET READY TO BATTLE!

And really, that's all you need right now. Dates and further information to follow shortly.

It is going to be fantastic and you should all show up.

More on this later.

My throat's all jacked, and it has been for a month.

I'm going to see a doctor when I get back to Orlando.

I hope it's nothing terminal.

Harry Potter 7 was alright, and let me pretty much double my number of pages read on this vacation in a day. It did pretty much what it needed to do, and I enjoyed it for that. I'm glad that I'm done with it, though. Now I can finally read the internet without worrying that it's trying to ruin my life.

I got the newest Darkest of the Hillside Thickets album and I'm not sure what to think of it. They actually know how to sing/play their instruments now (a plus!), but the whole goofy mythos feel isn't nearly as strong as it used to be. This is a pity. I'm going to have to listen to it a few more times, before I'm really sure how I feel about it.

I'm going home tomorrow. I really hope my work isn't going to be a nightmare when I get back to it. I've enjoyed seeing my family again so far, but being locked in a house for a week with 11 other people you only share marginal common interests with is a little nerve wracking. I'm looking forward to coming back.

Since I arrived at my yearly family reunion last Saturday I have read the entirety of:

Still Life With Woodpecker -- Tom Robbins (277 pages)

There Are Doors -- Gene Wolfe (313 pages)

Food Court Druids, Cherohonkees, and Other Creatures Unique to the Republic -- Robert Lanham (177 pages)

Now that I type out their lengths it doesn't seem all that impressive, especially since they're all pretty light reads. I'm about half way through Waiting for Godot and after that it's back to Gravity's Rainbow. I'm really hoping I can knock all this shit down during this trip and switch back from input to output mode again. Still Life with Woodpecker was pleasant enough, although not especially inspirational. There are Doors was pretty much the same. They both gave me a few ideas on portraying delusion, and I'm glad I read them both, but neither of them really blew my mind. Food Court Druids was humorous, and I think will be strangely helpful in writing quirks into throw-away characters.

I introduced my extended family to Survive Style 5+. Levels of appreciation. . .varied. You really don't realize how raunchy a lot of what you watch is until you watch it with your grandparents. At least I managed to beat the temptation to bring The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai with me.

Somewhat related, my sister seems to be enjoying Story of the Eye. This makes me happy. Reading that story aloud to Andrew, Parke, and Jason played a strong part in keeping me sane on the drive up to Ohio on the 4th. I want to infect everyone I know with it.

I've been playing a lot of tennis. I really need to find my racket and get a group going in Orlando again. It is a pleasant sport.

I wonder if I can resist the urge to pick up a copy of Ulysses when I get home. I need to get around to reading that eventually, but I know it's a good way to keep me from writing anything on my lunch breaks for another month or something horrible like that. See also, Harry Potter.

Harry Potter comes out the day before I leave here. I know the moment I get home it's all going to be spoiled for me instantly. I wonder if I can knock that fucker down in one day.

I wonder if I can buy that fucker in one day.

I miss writing. I am sad I had a creative breakdown. I need a muse. I feel unfocused.

God Hand on hard mode is a total bitch.

I should get a tattoo.
